IEEE SSIT Online Virtual Community

All SSIT members are invited to join our online community, at <https://www.ieeecommunities.org/ssit>. You have to "apply" for membership in the community on the first screen of this website but that's usually granted within 24 hours. There' you'll find threads on recent articles in IEEE Technology & Society Magazine, society governance issues, and other current topics, as well as announcements of upcoming events. Current discussion topics include: digital identity, moral buffers and crime proofing of products.

Fall Board of Governors Meeting

The fall SSIT BOG’s meeting was held at Columbia University in September. At the meeting it was announced that SSIT membership continues to grow, being the only society in division 6 to do so. The BOG voted to have SSIT representation in the tri-annual IEEE Sections Congress and to partner in various ways with a number of sister societies. SSIT finances are on target for the fiscal year. Minutes of the meeting can be found at http://chortle.ccsu.edu/BOG/BOGindex.html.

Winter BOG Meeting

The winter BOG’s meeting will be Saturday, December 4 at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, CA.

SSIT Officers for 2005

At the fall BOG’s meeting Brian O’Connell was elected president and Karl Perusich was elected vice-president. Other society officers will be Secretary, Bradley Kjell, Treasurer, Karl Stephan, and Past-President, Clint Andrews.

SSIT Conferences

ISTAS 2005

ISTAS 2005 will be held June 8-10, 2005 at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Ca. Sponsored by IEEE-SSIT and Loyola Marymount University, the conference theme is Weapons and Wires: Social Implications of ICT and Global Security. More information can be found at the conference website:

National Institute for Engineering Ethics

IEEE SSIT collaborates with other organizations on topics of mutual interest, such as the National Institute for Engineering Ethics (NIEE).  NIEE promotes ethics in engineering education and practice through correspondence courses, workshops, and videos.  NIEE has recently released a new video "Incident at Morales," which dramatizes a case in engineering
ethics.  For more information, see
www.niee.org.

Technology and Society Magazine

Visit the SSIT web site at http://ieee.org/ssit, and the IEEE Technology and Society Magazine home page http://www.njcc.com/~techsoc/. The T&S site displays tables of contents of past issues, a free sample on line article, and provides links to IEEExplore, where SSIT members can access electronic (pdf) files of all T&S articles.

Forecasting the Internet: Online Survey

SSIT members are encouraged to participate in an online survey of their attitudes about the internet. The project's goal is to see where experts agree and disagree about the potential social impact of the internet. The findings will illuminate issues for policy makers, spark debate and further research among scholars, and encourage those who build technology to ponder the societal effects of their creations. Access to the survey is at:

Questions, comments, and items of interest should be directed to the newsletter editor: Karl Perusich, Ph.D., at kperusic@galaxyinternet.net.
