2009 Summer Board of Governors Meeting

The summer board of governors meeting was held at the Mission Palms Hotel, Tempe, AZ on May 18. The members discussed ways of reducing the growing SSIT budget deficit. The complete minutes of the meeting can be found at http://chortle.ccsu.edu/BOG/BOGindex.html.

Volunteers Needed!

From Janet Rochester, President, SSIT:

SSIT needs volunteers.  We have committees that need leaders and members.  We need a volunteer to take charge of our Virtual Community.

SSIT needs volunteers to serve on IEEE committees.  Two important IEEE initiatives are the Smart Grid and IEEE Committee on Earth Observation (ICEO) (www.ieee-earth.org/).  Both are new cross-disciplinary groups that have been requesting our participation.  Both groups have several committees where you could use your expertise.

Other committees that would welcome SSIT participation are the Transportation and Aerospace Technology Policy Committee (an IEEE-USA committee), the Publications Thesaurus Board, and the IEEE Press.

We received many responses to the question in our survey about issues of interest to members.  Some of them relate to the Smart Grid or ICEO.  I urge those of you who responded to consider what you could do for these projects.

Most of the committees conduct their business by e-mail and conference call, so there would be no travel requirement.  Contact Janet Rochester at j.rochester@ieee.org if you want more information on any of these opportunities.

Other suggestions represent new areas for SSIT.  Are you willing to start some activity on a topic of interest?  It could be a conference paper or session, a T&S article, or a new committee.  Be creative.
